The Children’s jury noted: “This film, which is based on real events, has truly impressed us. We were incredibly moved by the story which unfolded. The excellent actors turned the scenes into touching moments. A film that depicts the racism and colonialism which unfortunately still exist in the world and compels you to reflect upon it all.”

During the fourth and final night of the Canadian Screen Awards ceremonies, held virtually for the second year in a row, the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television honored the film Beans in its film arts component. And twice rather than once!

In addition to the Canadian Screen Award for Best Motion Picture, Tracey Deer’s historical drama, launched at the Toronto Film Festival last fall, then presented at the Berlinale and Rendez-vous Québec Cinéma, also won the John-Dunning Award, awarded to the best first feature film. Beans was thus rewarded in two of the five categories where the film was nominated (Achievement in Cinematography, in Sound Mixing and in Casting).
